My school district offers an Honors Program. The school district website lists the following requirements to earn the Honors Seal Recognition:

  • Design and complete an in-depth Honors Project

  • Complete a minimum of five Advanced Placement (AP) courses, in three different content areas, with a grade of C or better

  • Take the AP course examinations

  • Complete a four-course sequence in one global language

  • Design and complete a Community Service Project of at least 25 hours

During the summer after my freshman year of high school, I was inspired by a volunteer experience organized by Adventures in Preservation with the Fairfield Foundation. The Fairfield Foundation is a non-profit at the forefront of using photogrammetry and drones in archeology. Two technologies I find fascinating and wanted to learn more about. During that experience, I spent hours helping with the drones and digging at the Fairfield Manor site while learning the rich history of the now 325-year-old home that was mostly destroyed by fire in 1897. Built by historically significant Virginians, the manor has a unique and important story that motivated my interest in helping Fairfield’s educational mission. That volunteer week, I proposed to build a 3D model of the manor to the foundation’s co-founder, Dr. Brown. That moment marked the beginning of an educational experience that has defined my high school career.

My sophomore school year at Jamestown High School, I enrolled in Mr. Nuckols' mechanical drafting class and earned my NOCTI certification. Anyone attending Jamestown High School should not miss taking this class or any other class Mr. Nuckols teaches! Later that year, I presented my honors project proposal to the WJCC Honors Committee and was approved. My sophomore proposal is below.

Today, I have devoted over 600 hours to the project and I am on track to receive the Honors Seal Recognition. Now I'm also a paid staff member at the Fairfield Foundation after starting as a volunteer intern. Using Dr. Brown's Ph.D. thesis and six old photographs, the 3D model is almost complete. It wasn't easy and required learning a variety of topics and software on my own. This website shows my journey.
